Vasectomy – a Simple, Effective Method of Birth Control

vasectomy procedure

A vasectomy is a sterilization procedure for men that provides a simple and effective method of permanent birth control. A vasectomy does not affect a man’s libido, or sex drive, his ability to have an erection, or his testosterone levels. The semen produced is not noticeably different in appearance or volume following a vasectomy than it was before the procedure (ejaculate volume is reduced by about five percent). The testicles continue to produce sperm as well, but the sperm has no outlet to the ejaculatory ducts, and is simply absorbed by surrounding tissue. Thus, the semen contains no sperm, eliminating the possibility of conception. Production of testosterone, the male hormone, is unaffected and released normally into the blood stream without change. About 600,000 men per year elect to have this sterilization surgery.

Using Advanced Vasectomy Techniques

In the past, vasectomies were invasive operations that required substantial recovery time. Today, thanks to advanced techniques, this male sterilization procedure can be done quickly and with minimal discomfort. “No scalpel” vasectomy utilizes specially designed tools inserted through a small opening. And “no-needle” anesthesia, using a jet spray device to provide rapid and effective numbing, is used by some urologists to replace injections of anesthetics. A urologist typically performs the operation. The procedure, which can be performed on an outpatient basis, entails cutting the vas deferens, the muscular structure that carries sperm from the testicles to the ejaculatory ducts. A small piece of the vas deferens is removed and the ends of the tubes are sealed closed. A single absorbable suture is used to close the small skin opening. This minimally invasive technique causes less tissue disruption for a faster and freer recovery and reduced chance of complications.
